Malibu Submits Letter of Support for Stronger Regional Collaboration on Wildfire Preparedness, Continues Local Mitigation Efforts

(Malibu, CA) – The City of Malibu is strengthening its wildfire preparedness efforts through regional partnerships and robust local initiatives.

On October 7, the City submitted a letter of support for the Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning’s application to FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), reinforcing the urgent need for unified action to build wildfire resilience across the region.

Los Angeles County’s application aims to create two Joint Powers Authorities (JPAs): one for the Santa Monica Mountains and one for the San Gabriel Mountains. This proposed structure would establish a formal partnership for public agencies to collaborate, share resources, and execute long-term wildfire prevention projects across the region.

“The recent wildfires have devastated our community – the Palisades Fire alone destroyed nearly 600 homes. The road to recovery must be paired with a unified, multi-jurisdictional fire preparedness and mitigation effort,” said Mayor Marianne Riggins. “Long-term resilience depends on coordinated action across the entire region. By coming together, we can secure the resources and regional cooperation we need to protect our community.”

While Malibu supports long-term regional planning, the City is equally focused on local programs that directly support and prepare residents. Malibu’s Fire Safety Liaisons provide year-round guidance, help coordinate community preparedness efforts and offer free home wildfire hazard assessments to help residents strengthen their properties against fire risks. Fire Safety Liaison Bradley Yocum also helps Malibu neighborhoods pursue a Firewise Community recognition, a national recognition that honors and benefits communities taking meaningful steps to reduce wildfire risk.

“Wildfire preparedness doesn’t happen overnight; it takes ongoing collaboration, strong relationships, and community action. Our programs and services help lay that foundation here in Malibu. Our primary goal is to empower residents to take an active role in protecting their homes and neighborhoods,” said Fire Safety Liaison Gabe Etcheverry.

At its October 15 meeting, the City Council approved a $100,000 grant for the Malibu Community Brigade to support wildfire safety projects, including public education, brush clearance, and neighborhood outreach efforts. City Council will approve the official agreement at its Monday, November 10 meeting. Watch the Community Brigade video for more details.

Through on-the-ground community programs and regional partnerships, the City is investing in a balanced approach that better protects Malibu. The City encourages all residents to get involved, stay informed, and join the movement toward wildfire-resilience. For more information and resources, visit MalibuRebuilds.org/Fire-Preparedness.
