Malibu’s Allocation of $4 Million Rebuild State Grant
The City of Malibu appreciates the community’s ongoing engagement and shared commitment to rebuilding our city stronger, safer, and more resilient after the 2025 fires.
Recently, some residents have expressed confusion regarding reports that Malibu received $4 million in state assistance for rebuilding. We understand how this misunderstanding occurred and want to provide accurate information and context.
The City of Malibu did not receive $4 million in direct funding. Instead, through the leadership of Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, the State of California established the 2025 Recovery Planning Grant Program, which made up to $4 million available statewide for communities impacted by the January 2025 fires. Malibu’s specific allocation was $318,698, which will be used to supplement the City’s recovery and rebuilding efforts – not replace existing resources.
The City is carefully coordinating with FEMA and Cal OES to ensure compliance with state and federal rules and to avoid duplicating benefits. Once finalized, the grant funds will help support specialized recovery caseworkers who will guide homeowners through the rebuilding process—from initial planning applications to final inspections—providing concierge-level assistance to streamline the experience for fire survivors.
